Savuti – best known as the prime “big game area” of Botswana, is lion country at its best. Start the day at dawn, in time to see the night prowlers before they lie up for the day. As always, where the big predators abound, so too, do the scavengers – spotted hyena, jackal and vulture. Savuti is also known for its zebra migrations in March/April and again in November. Thousands of zebras migrate through Savuti while the rain pans hold water, thus offering a photographer’s paradise of black and white patterns on the golden grass of the Savuti marsh. Lion prides make the most of this opportunity and ambush the zebra at every given chance. At first light, one can observe a full lion stalk to its end – a virtual lion kill at a choke point where zebra have to pass between thick bush on one side and the famous Savuti hills on the other.
